An Elephant Battery establishment in 1890 consisted of six guns with 12 Elephants and 262 bullocks. Each battery were equipped with 4 x 40 pounder rifled muzzle-loading guns and 2 x 6.5 inch howitzers.

The batteries were based at Bengal, Madras and two batteries in Bombay.
Elephant Battery Section
An Elephant Battery consisted of three sections, each with two guns commanded by a Subaltern. The guns had a detachment of eight British gunners with a corporal detachment commander. The gun was pulled by two elephants with Indian drivers.

The logistical support for carrying ammunition, gun stores, equipment and rations was carried on bullock drawn carts, with 262 bullocks and 131 drivers.
